Paid externship in canine & feline medicine, surgery, dentistry, and geriatrics
Fairview Veterinary Hospital and Regional Veterinary Center
Our team provides a paid 2 to 6 week externship rotation for up to two students at a time at our veterinary practices Regional Veterinary Center and Fairview Veterinary Hospital. "Regional Veterinary Center" is our newly remodeled and just opened practice providing niche-based care limited to canine and feline Dentistry and Geriatrics. Seven miles to the west is our canine and feline primary care practice "Fairview Veterinary Hospital” which is currently in its 46th year of being the premier evidence based practice in our area. We have just started the process of AAHA accreditation and are very excited to be taking this step. To keep things interesting for our team we are adding Goat Medicine services to our repertoire. Everyone here is REALLY excited about Goats!! We are very well equipped so that we can provide accurate, modern, evidence based care. Our practice management software is ezyVet, which is perhaps the most advanced and flexible software in our industry. We have a new and complete in-house Idexx system including CBC, CS, PT/PTT, Snap readers, and Sedivue (anything we can’t do in-house is rapidly handled by Idexx Reference Lab), Digital radiography (both 300ma and dental), new Companion Animal Health therapy laser system, Tonpen tonometers, a university level dental suite, a sterile surgery suite, three separate pet wards for canine, feline, and quarantine, and (most importantly) a super-nice team! In December 2019, as the veterinary profession began to recognize the toll that the general public was taking on our collective teams industry-wide, we took decisive action and created a “Not One More” program in our practice. The main tenants of our NOM include: 1). Being quick to dismiss/fire clients that are dis-respectful to any team member; 2. Taking new clients by application…our short process has become very effective at weeding out potentially difficult clients; 3. Creating and maintaining a ‘no drama’ team of veterinary technicians and assistants; 4). Scheduling so that we are efficient while being very careful to not over-function; and 5). We limit our urgent care for established clients only, which has minimized significant stress and liability issues that arise with non-client emergency work. We limit ourselves to surgery that is in our repertoire of experience and within our comfort level, and refer that which isn’t. We DO NOT PERFORM declawing, ear cropping, obstetrics, nor convenience euthanasia. For clients seeking convenience euthanasia we offer voluntary surrender and intake the rescues, rehabilitate their medical needs, and adopt them out to fur-ever homes. Our COVID safety protocols have proven effective at preventing spread of the virus in our work environment. We are currently running 100% curbside care with no clients in our facilities since March 1st 2020. We have an excellent workflow using our bank-style drive through window plus a separate car-port for efficiency and team safety. We will not return to having clients inside until those of us that want to be vaccinated are, and community herd immunity has been achieved.
