Location: Kanab, Utah Work closely with Veterinarians and all Clinic staff, HorseHaven staff/Management to provide medical care to all patients within the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Horse Haven department. Duties encompass a wide array of tasks including but not limited to medical record management, caregiver communication, multiple aspects of veterinary nursing care, and financial itemization for services provided. They must be able to perform both general and advanced skills independently for a large population (100+ large animals). Horse Haven’s current population includes: horses, miniature horses, donkeys, pot-bellied pigs, sheep, and goats. Responsibilities: - Communicate professionally and with a high level of customer service to Clients, Veterinary staff, Management, other Sanctuary departments and Volunteers regarding all job responsibilities, especially the health of Horse Haven patients.
- Maintain the ability to follow policies and procedures set by the Medical Director and Clinic Manager.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding patient status/treatment, client information and other sensitive clinic operations.
- Act as liaison between Veterinarians (internal and external), Horse Haven/Clinic Management, and Horse Haven Caregivers regarding the health, status, and welfare of Horse Haven animals.
- Must be able to work collectively within the team in managing/scheduling active medical cases.
- Perform and prioritize intake exams and adoption processes on new/returning and exiting large animals.
- Must have confidence to follow Veterinarians orders in routine, specialized and emergent cases independently.
- General medical skills include but not limited to: hospitalized patient husbandry, ability to monitor general health of Horse Haven Animals, triage for emergencies (ie Colic, lameness,urinary obstruction in small ruminants) post surgical care, routine general wellness checks, Veterinarian ordered re-checks, interim follow-ups for long-term medications, laser therapy, and ensuring animals are current on all preventative medical protocols, euthanasia.
- Have general surgical skills: sterile technique, maintain injectable/gas anesthesia, recognizing anesthetic complications, specialized equipment, routine procedures and exams (ie pig tusk and toe nail trims), physical exam, blood draws and dental (all large animal species).
- Perform above medical/surgical skills while following strict quarantine/Isolation protocols.
- Have a general working knowledge in the care for special needs animals: lameness, physical therapy, blind, neonatal large animal, patients in a hoist, neurologic, chronic wound management/bandaging etc. .
- Provide medical care for animals that have significant behavioral issues, which can include but is not limited to shyness, fearfulness and aggression.
- Perform laboratory testing and basic interpretation: cbc, chemistry panels, urine/fecal analysis (multiple species), facilitate outside lab (routine and state/federal regulatory testing) etc.
- Working knowledge of common drug dosages and interactions in conjunction with a sound mathematical knowledge in order to properly administer medications and fluids.
- Must be able to support and implement quarantine protocols though development of knowledge of local zoonotic disease, state laws and herd management.
- Have a working knowledge of medical conditions, terminology, transcription and data entry.
- Write and deliver customized continuing education classes for Caregivers and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
- Must be able to learn and support Parelli Natural Horsemanship training for all Large Animal species.
- Clean all work areas and appropriately sanitize the clinic and grounds including; mop and Accel floors, disinfect: water bowls/dishes/litter pans/bedding, laundry, collect trash/recycling, clean exam rooms/restrooms.
