SoBran is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian II (Floater) to serve at the National Institutes of Health.  

OVERVIEW:   This is a general summary of the responsibilities associated with the position of Floater Clinical Veterinarian II for the NIH, Laboratory Animal Research Contract (LARC).  This description is not inclusive of all duties required to successfully complete the job each day.  It is intended to reflect SoBran’s contractual obligations to the LARC.  Employees are expected to complete all assigned duties each day.

DUTY HOURS & LOCATION ASSIGNMENT:

Employees are expected to arrive to work at the time and location specified for the position to which they are assigned.  Work hours typically occur between 6:00 am and 8:30 pm M-F, and include coverage outside of core hours when required.  These assignments will include working on weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.  Weekend/Holiday hours range from 6:00 am – 6:30 pm.  Duty hours and location assignments may be modified at the discretion of the Program Management Staff or at the request of the Government with or without prior notice. 

This position is designated as “essential personnel” requiring attendance during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, mechanical/facility failures or other scheduled or unscheduled Government closures as directed by Program or Government Management. 

This position will support all NIH/DVR worksites to include locations in Bethesda and Poolesville, MD, or any other locations as designated or required by the SoBran or the Government.

DESCRIPTION of DUTIES:

The Clinical Veterinarian II ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and standard operating procedures.  They participate in and direct the application of veterinary care and medical oversight for the animal colony to include preventative medicine, health surveillance, medical treatment, research support, anesthesia, survival and non-survival surgical manipulations, the use of biological, radiological and chemical hazards and animal transfers within and between institutions.  The Clinical Veterinarian also participates in site visits and routine inspections by internal and external oversight organizations and acts as a liaison between DVR and the NIH Intramural research staff.

Duties (non-inclusive list):

1. Understands and follows all SOP’s and Quality Assurance Standards. 
2. Provides veterinary care consistent with state, Federal and NIH/DVR institutional practices, guidelines, and policies. 
3. Provides regular and timely monitoring and evaluation of the large and small animal colonies including non-human primates.Tasks include recommending, directing and applying appropriate corrective measures to maintain colony health or in response to adverse complications resulting from unanticipated medical conditions or research manipulations. 
4. Directs the application of therapeutic treatment to include the initiation, administration, alteration, and termination of treatment regimens. 
5. Follows and directs the application of all NIH/DVR preventive medicine, quarantine, conditioning, and isolation procedures. 
6. Assists in the development and application of animal health surveillance and environmental sanitation programs. 
7. Performs routine, emergency and research related surgical manipulations and sample collections.
8.  Participates in animal study proposal review and procedure scheduling.
9. Participates in new investigator orientation programs.
10. Assists with staff training and skill evaluation.
11. Participates in required training and continuing educational activities to maintain certification and licensure requirements.
12. Communicates with various parties including NIH/DVR staff, IC Veterinarians, Investigative Staff, and other internal and external contacts.
13. Generation and maintenance of various reports and NIH/DVR databases.
14. Provides scheduled and emergency after-hours veterinary care as required.
15. Participates in weekend and holiday veterinary care assignments and duty rotations. 
16. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
