We are seeking a veterinarian who will serve as a HQHVSN Surgeon to work at the PAWS Chicago Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic. The veterinary surgeon is responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, ensuring all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients. This person is responsible for ensuring the highest quality of care for customer-owned and PAWS Chicago adoptable animals present at the Lurie Clinic. Our ideal Veterinarian has a deep, personal passion for our mission, being part of solving Chicago’s pet overpopulation challenge, and is committed to serving the people and pets of the Chicago area. Our days and hours of operation reflect the needs of our clients, so Sundays and some early evenings will be required. This is an exciting, fast-paced and challenging position.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform sterilization surgeries on felines and canines. Spay/Neuter Veterinarian is responsible for performing 45+ surgeries per day based 50/50% mix of spays and neuters
Ability to handle anesthetic and surgical complications
Make reasonable and sensible medical decisions
Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols
Communicate effectively with Chief Veterinarian, to keep management apprised of all out of the ordinary
Communicates effectively with clients and colleagues
Depending on experience, additional surgical procedures, such as dentals, mass removals, amputations, wound repairs and optic surgeries may be necessitated, and possible occasional emergency surgeries.
Potential for interdepartmental work in the Shelter Medicine program.
Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members
Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the state of Illinois
At least one year of experience as a high volume spay/neuter surgeon
Ability to perform cryptorchid neuters and difficult spay surgeries such as pyometra, dystocia, in heat, obese and large patients
Must be available Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays. Schedule is subject to change
Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours
